How the C4 Hex Dumbbell Is Built
As our Hex Dumbbell Buying Guide explains, nearly every hex dumbbell that fails in commercial service fails in one of three hidden places: the head geometry, the rubber encasement, or the joint between head and handle. Here is how the C4 handles each one.
Hex Head Geometry
The C4 head is modeled after a hex nut, giving it a mechanical, robust look and six broad, flat faces that sit dead level on the floor. The corners are generously rounded rather than sharp. Rounded corners spread impact over a larger area, so the rubber wears slowly and the encasement does not split at the edges — the most common failure point on cheaply molded hex heads. Both heads are dimensionally identical and mounted square to the handle, so a C4 placed on a flat surface does not rock or spin.
Cast-Iron Head, Steel Sleeve and Weld-Reinforced Handle
Inside each rubber head is a solid cast-iron core. Rather than drilling a hole in a finished casting, we cast the iron directly around a 3 mm-wall steel sleeve. As the molten iron cools it shrinks and grips the sleeve, creating a metallurgical, interference-fit bond that no adhesive can match. Thick Rubber Encasement
The rubber is molded over the cast-iron head to a substantial, uneven-by-design thickness: heavier where the dumbbell actually lands, thinner where it never touches the floor. On a cut-open 12.5 kg C4 we measured roughly 8.75 mm on the flat resting face, 6.85 mm in the recessed panel, 11.6 mm at the corners and almost 18 mm at the primary impact edge, with the thinnest section still about 6 mm. The compound is 100% virgin rubber — no recycled filler — chosen for low odor, consistent hardness and long service life; it cushions impact, protects flooring and keeps the weight room quiet.

ASTM B117 Salt Spray Test — 48 Hours, No Rust
We tested the handle finish in a salt-spray chamber to ASTM B117, the industry standard for corrosion resistance, using a sodium chloride mist. At the 24-hour mark — a level that already exceeds typical home-use exposure — the handle showed no change. We continued to 48 hours: no rust, no pitting, no lifting of the finish. That is the level of corrosion resistance a handle needs to survive years of sweaty hands in a busy commercial gym — and it is the level the C4’s handle design delivers.

2.5 m Repeated Drop Test
A 5 kg C4 was dropped from a measured height of 2.5 m onto the factory floor — not once, but repeatedly, six drops and counting. After the series the dumbbell showed a few white scuff marks and a minor dent in the rubber. Nothing loosened, nothing cracked, and the heads remained solid on the handle.

Second-Floor Drop Test — 12.5 kg
To push further, a 12.5 kg C4 was thrown from the second floor of our factory. The rubber picked up abrasions and two separate indentations, exactly as an energy-absorbing encasement should. The head did not move, the handle did not shift, and the dumbbell was fully usable. This is the real-world worst case — a heavy dumbbell dropped from well above shoulder height — and the cast-over-sleeve, weld-reinforced construction held.
Cutaway Inspection and Measurement
Every claim above comes from a cut-open production dumbbell, measured with calipers on camera: 3 mm steel tube, 6–18 mm rubber, 33.9 mm handle on the 6 kg.
